Since 2014, ATHNA has offered its members a free, annual NED day, an opportunity to connect with fellow travel health nurses, earn CE credits, and receive important travel medicine updates. This year's Networking, Education, and Development event took place on two dates and in four locations. Members gathered in Briarcliff Manor, NY and in East Garrison, CA on July 21 and then on August 4 more members met in Philadelphia and Austin. Everyone enjoyed the presentations, the networking, and the delicious luncheons. NEDs are typically held in member's homes which provides a very warm and welcoming, intimate feel. Members interact together throughout the day and form bonds of friendship that continue after they leave for home. As one Texas attendee described her Austin experience:
"It was such a pleasure to have the opportunity to meet other nurses involved in travel nursing.
It's great to have these small groups where we can network and have a group to discuss ideas and concerns with like minded nurses."
San Antonio, Texas
This year's NED featured six topics and included a new educational game of "Travel Health Pictionary." A prize was awarded to the member who correctly identified the most images. See how many questions you can get right by clicking here. Other topics included Reproductive Issues for Women Travelers, Pre-travel Consultation for Last Minute Travelers, Chagas' Disease, The Highly Allergic Traveler, and Using Your Smartphone to Access Key Travel Health Resources. Heading Home Healthy, a collaboration of CDC, The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and others was added as a new resource by Philadelphia host, Maura Lash. Check out its special features at www.headinghomehealthy.org.
For our members who could not attend NED 4.0, ATHNA plans to offer some of the content as online educational programs with CE credit. The first set of slides should go up right after Labor Day, so please visit www.athna.org then.
Special thanks for another successful NED round goes to home hosts Maura Lash, Nancy Stoll, and Charlotte Katzin, presenter Julie Richards, and Zoom Coordinator Kevin Long. ATHNA could not have done it without you!
Couldn't make it this year? Hope to see you at NED 2019- it will be a very special one for ATHNA...
